Ep. 130 || Gospel Hope When You’re Annoyed as a Mom

Motherhood is a gift from God. We never want to forget that. But while we’re down here in the trenches, we can’t ignore real annoyances—like who left this sock behind and why are there crumbs everywhere? In this episode, Emily and Laura discuss why moms get annoyed and how the gospel shapes our responses. They even discuss some practical tips. Every mom is going to face annoying things, so we can sigh and roll our eyes or turn back in dependence to God who supplies for our every need. Christ came to save us—annoyances and all—so we could learn to love others even when we’re annoyed.

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. Let’s acknowledge what a gift it is to be a mom. Did your kids do anything hilarious or heart-warming this week? Now, let’s be honest, as grateful as we are for our children, sometimes we get annoyed with them. Can you think of specific examples of what annoys you in motherhood?

  2. Proverbs 12:16 says, “Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.” Taking some of your examples from Q.1, what would be a foolish reaction and what would be a prudent reaction?

  3. Do you justify your annoyed reactions or reason you have the right to be annoyed? (We do too!) It’s easy to believe we deserve something like a clean space, quiet time, or a break from repeating ourselves. How does Christ’s example of patience with us—as we’re still (annoying) sinners—change our perspective towards our children?

  4. To pour out the fruits of the Spirit, we need to pour in the gospel. Are you caring for your soul through the study of God’s word, prayer, and fellowship with believers? Why do these things help us grow in holiness?

  5. Ultimately, every annoying moment can draw us to God. They can remind us that Christ is continually patient with us as we complain, ignore, and disobey him. How does God’s grace to you encourage you to be gracious towards your kids?
