Social Media 03: Please Like Me
Let’s get real: we all want to be liked. No matter where we are on the social media spectrum, from a professional content creator on Instagram to an occasional poster for the sake of the grandparents, God’s principles for the way we share content remain the same. In this episode, Emily and Laura walk through questions to consider as we seek to honor God in the things we post online. When we’re known and loved by him, our content won’t be ruled by our desire to be ‘liked’ by others.
As a part of our Social Media mini-series, we’re digging deep into the impact of social media—on our brains, bodies, and hearts. In light of this, we’ve created “Wake Up! A Social Media Workbook.” This podcast companion helps you take Laura and Emily’s conversations further and apply them to your own life. In the workbook, you’ll find Scripture, questions, and a prayer relating to each episode. We encourage you to follow along week by week, completing the questions for each topic after the corresponding episode’s release.

This mini-series is brought to you in part by Crossway, publisher of Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners by Dane Ortlund. This book reminds us that we grow in Christ by going deeper into the gospel truths that first saved us. Drawing on wisdom from people in church history, Ortlund reminds readers to fix their eyes on Jesus in their battle against sin, living in light of his grace and their identity in him. R|M Apply Questions:
Verse 1: Isaiah 43:7 “...everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
Wake Up:
What behaviors or clues do you see in your life that might reveal that you value being “liked” online? Or if you rarely post content, in what ways are you in tune with the popularity of others online (e.g., do you notice or talk about when someone is embroiled in controversy or is really growing in popularity?)
While it’s not wrong to desire acceptance or being liked, how do you respond when it isn’t given online (e.g., a post doesn’t get many comments or likes, or you don’t gain followers)? What does this say about where your identity lies?
Verse 2: Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord.”
Wisdom:
Define “stewardship.” Describe how this concept applies to social media, regardless of your platform size. What changes or practices might you implement to show you trust God with your social media channels?
Reference the Show Notes and read our social media engagement policy. Spend some time coming up with your own policy and mission for your content on social media (whether one sentence or multiple pages). Get creative! How can this mission statement or personal policy help you determine what and when to post in the future?
Walk in His Ways:
Father, I desire to be liked and accepted. Thank you that this yearning to be accepted in relationships and community is of you. As I create content online, “see if there be any wicked way in me,” and show me if I have misplaced longings for affirmation and attention on social media. Help me to steward my platforms well, loving the weaker sister, being a generous giver, and modeling a Christlike humility online.
