Fear 03: The Principles
Whether we fear an imminent threat or an unlikely scenario, we’re often left wondering how to respond. Maybe we’re more likely to hide and shy away from any possible conflict or to react sharply, boldly fighting back before we’ve sought the Lord. As we face our fears, it’s helpful to stop to think—where is this coming from and what biblical truths apply? In this episode, Emily and Laura talk through how we handle frightening things, giving us principles for facing our fears both big and small, and pointing us to the peace that Christ brings.
Note: We know that “fear” covers a wide variety of issues—some so lighthearted that we can easily brush them off, and some so disturbing that we can barely utter them to our closest friend. This series is aimed at the most common fears in motherhood—the things that cross our minds and motivate our daily actions. But due to the limitations of our knowledge and the brevity of a 7-episode series we don’t aim to address life’s most complex and sober terrors. Please keep in mind that some instances and experiences of fear may require professional counseling, pastoral care, or a medical doctor. If you find yourself in a situation that feels much larger than the topics we cover in this series, we encourage you to seek help from professionals who are trained to care for you best in this struggle.
The battle against fear takes an army, so we want to give you additional tools for that fight. In our Fear mini-series package you’ll find:
“Fear Him More,” a five-day devotional on fear and motherhood
The Wheel of Truth (A printable craft to help you and your kids believe true things about God as you face your fears.)

R|M Apply Questions:
Laura and Emily both shared practical things that help them feel safe. What are some things that help you feel safe? How do you respond when you don’t have access to those things?
Think about the thing you’re most afraid of, or think about something that you’re often afraid of. What true things can you remember to help you fight that fear? How does truth change how you see your fear?
How have you seen your fears serve as a warning sign for you? How have those fears protected you from things you shouldn’t be doing?
When it comes to boldness and courage, are you more like the one who acts quickly or the one who waits to act? What is your motivation behind your response and how can you grow in the area of boldness and courage for God’s glory and the good of others?
What are the priorities of your heart and where does Christ fit with those priorities? Is there a fear, or several different fears, that are usurping the throne of your heart and taking it away from the Lord?
