Gospel Mom 03: On Why God Feels Distant + Other Things (GM - C5-6)

For most of us, the idea of spiritual disciplines isn’t new: we know as moms pursuing Christ, it’s important to be in God’s Word, pray, and enjoy godly community. But… we also know it’s easier said than done. How do we find time between packing lunches and keeping everyone’s schedules straight to pursue spiritual habits and disciplines? In this episode, Emily and Laura give us a fresh take on what it means to evaluate our individual needs as moms, and how this frees us to look at spiritual growth differently than many of us have before. By God’s grace, these practices will become less of a checkbox and more of a can’t-miss as we move forward in faith.

Mentioned on the Show:

Trying to find God’s will for your motherhood?

As moms, we’re surrounded by a lot of messages of who we “should” be and what we “should” do. But in Christ, there’s incredible freedom to be a mom who is unique and individual, while glorifying God and being faithful in motherhood. Not sure what that looks like? That’s exactly why the Risen Motherhood co-founders, Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler, wrote these books.

Gospel Mom: How to Make Biblical Decisions and Discover the Mom God Created You to Be, along with its companion workbook Becoming a Gospel Mom is available now.

R|M Apply Questions:

  • Before diving into this further, let’s have a gut-check of where your spiritual disciplines and habits stand right now. (Remember, no condemnation here—our righteousness is in Christ!) Write down what spiritual disciplines and habits are part of your day-to-day rhythms. What is working well? What disciplines or habits might you want to add or change?

  • Spiritual disciplines and soul-care habits are available to us in every season of motherhood, but they’ll look different depending on our current circumstances. Spend some time evaluating your current season—what does it look like to commit to spiritual disciplines and soul care right now? Write down specific barriers you might be facing, as well as opportunities.

  • Pick 1 discipline you can start today. Maybe that looks like 10 minutes of prayer each day, spending the first 15 minutes of naptime in your Bible, or popping in your earbuds to listen to a chapter of God’s Word on audiobook.

    • How can you incorporate a discipline or habit into something you’re already doing? (Ex: Can you pray during your morning commute or memorize Scripture in the school pickup line?)

  • Spend some time in prayer that the Lord will guide you and grow your heart for the things he loves—trust the slow progress, and trust him when you miss a day. He is faithful to complete the good work he began! (Philippians 1:6)
