Ep. 160 || Walking in the Spirit: An Interview on Faithful Motherhood with Jani Ortlund

Motherhood comes with lots of hard things—but by God’s grace, those very things can bring fruit in our lives. In this episode, Emily and Laura interview Jani Ortlund about some of the hard things she faced as a mom of young children, like fatigue, fear, and finances. Jani is a writer, speaker, and podcast host who ministers alongside her husband, Ray. She is a mother of four and grandmother of fourteen who remembers well the challenges of the little years. In the midst of the hard, she encourages us to keep seeking the Lord, trusting that he will gently lead us.

R|M Apply Questions:

  1. Fatigue, fear, and finances were some of the hardest parts of motherhood for Jani. What’s the biggest struggle for you right now? How might the Lord be growing fruit in your life through that struggle?

  2. Motherhood can give us lots of things to fear. Jani encouraged us that the opposite of fear isn’t courage, it’s faith in the Lord built by spending time with him. What are some of your fears? What are some aspects of God’s character and promises in scripture that you could meditate on to help calm your fears?

  3. Isaiah 40:11 says that God “gently leads those that have young.” How have you experienced God gently leading you in motherhood? What are some areas you need him to lead you in now?

  4. Jani talked about the importance of setting our minds on the things of the Spirit and gave examples of how she did this—listening to scriptural music, being intentional about who she spent time with, posting scripture around her home, etc. What might it look like for you to set your mind on the things of the Spirit this week?

  5. It can be easy for marriage to be put on the back burner with all the demands of raising young children. How is your marriage doing? What are some practical things you could do to prioritize your husband and cultivate intimacy with him?
