Moms + Work 02: Oops, I Fell Into a Ditch!
It’s time to make the bed—again. Do the dishes—again. Sit in a meeting—again. Answer an email—again. When we’re in a cycle of everyday, ordinary work, what is our reaction? Some of us dive head-first into busyness and box-checking, and some of us pull back, saving the hard work for “later.” In this episode, Emily and Laura examine our various sin tendencies when it comes to our work as moms. While we all will face challenges in our work on this side of heaven, God is gracious to help us work according to his principles and lead us in his ways.
As a part of our Moms + Work series, we’ve created a new workbook to help moms process through their income-producing endeavors. If you are currently considering changes to your income-producing work—whether that’s taking a job for the first time as your family enters a new season, scaling back because you’ve added another child, or debating whether or not to go back to work after your first baby, this workbook is for you. Filled with questions to help you consider logistics and practical execution, as well as take you deeper with heart motivations and desires, this workbook can be done alone or with your spouse.
We understand that the decision to pursue income-producing work is different for all moms, each with a unique set of circumstances. No matter your season, we pray this workbook is of service to you. This will correspond with Episode 3 of the Moms + Work mini-series, but can be done at any time.
R|M Apply Questions:
Think about your day-to-day work (friendly reminder, “work” is broad and includes work at home/away from home, paid/unpaid, etc.!). Are you more prone to find your identity in how many tasks you can complete, or do you tend to let ‘harder’ tasks stack up?
Read through Luke 10:38-42. Do you resonate more with Mary or Martha, and why? What encouragement do you find in Jesus’ response in v. 42?
Have you ever been tempted to “shortcut” God’s principles, believing that the ends justify the means? How does God’s design for work show us a better way?
Emily and Laura discuss the ways different moms will need to adjust and scale their perspectives based on sin tendencies in work. As you look at the week ahead, what small steps can you take to focus on your identity in Christ?
